What’s in a no surname!

There are so many worries and tensions in this VUCA world, but you won’t imagine that there can exist a problem because of no surname.

This is a story of a girl born in a small city. She had many friends since childhood. Her friends used to come home and her dad would ask what were their castes, from where did they belong! And that’s it. No information like how good a friend they are, what all we do in school.

The same questions persisted for her siblings’ friends too. She got fed up of this caste thing and hated it so much, quite young.

In class 8, she was filling the examination form, and her class teacher asked if she will write her first name only or with surname. She chose the first name only. In North India, people exist with first names also. And thus, her official name was just a single first name.

First issue she faced was while making the passport. And it can not be called an issue as they deal with such single named people and they put the same first name in the surname also. So you become abc abc in the passport.

Then the next issue happened while writing research papers. Some journals mandatorily ask for the surname. You can not proceed with a blank.

The most irritating problem was when she moved to another state. State of Maharashtra to be precise. Here, after listening to her name abc, they ask abc what? They have made their official systems stubborn for two or three names. They do not acknowledge and accept that some people are happily existing with the first name only, in other parts of the world. .

The rigidity of any kind is so so repulsive. And she sometimes feel that her idea of not having a surname, has been useless.

This world really wants to judge you first, on merely listening to your name.
